Um UMFÍ
Ungmennafélag Íslands er landssamband ungmennafélaga skammstafað UMFÍ. Markmið hreyfingarinnar er "Ræktun lýðs og lands" og kjörorðið er "Íslandi allt". Fáni UMFÍ er Hvítbláinn. Sambandsaðilar eru 18 héraðssambönd og 11 félög með beina aðild. Alls eru um 300 félög innan UMFÍ með yfir 100 þúsund félagsmenn. UMFÍ leggur áherslu á að allir geti verið með, og að þátttaka er lífsstíll.
UMFÍ er landssamtök ungmennafélaga á Íslandi, stofnuð árið 1907. Markmið samtakanna er "ræktun lýðs og lands". Í því felst að rækta það besta hjá hverjum einstaklingi og einnig að leggja rækt við íslenska tungu og menningu. Ennfremur að vernda náttúru landsins og að græða þau sár sem myndast hafa í samskiptum lands og þjóðar eða fyrir tilstuðlan náttúrunnar sjálfrar.
Hlutverk UMFÍ er að samræma starfsemi ungmennafélaga á Íslandi og veita þjónustu við aðildarfélög og félagsmenn. Einnig kemur UMFÍ fram út á við fyrir hönd ungmennafélaganna, til dæmis gagnvart stjórnvöldum og í erlendum samskiptum.

Ungmennafélag Íslands var stofnað á Þingvöllum 2. ágúst árið 1907, en fyrsta ungmennafélagið, Umf. Akureyrar, var stofnað á Akureyri í ársbyrjun 1906. Ungmennafélagshugsjónin fór sem eldur í sinu um landið og barátta hófst strax fyrir betra landi, bættri þjóð og því varð kjörorðið "Ræktun lýðs og lands". Hreyfingin hafði strax mikil þjóðfélagsleg áhrif, jók félagsþroska fólks, bjartsýni og trú á land og þjóð.
Ungmennafélagar hófu strax að klæða landið skógi, byggðu sundlaugar og samkomuhús, sköpuðu aðstöðu til íþróttaiðkunar, juku samkomuhald, héldu málfundi þar sem fólk lærði að koma fram. Barátta hófst fyrir byggingu héraðsskóla, sem urðu undirstaða menntunar í dreifbýli. Það var fátt sem ungmennafélagar létu sig ekki varða ef það var landi og lýð til hagsbóta.

Árið 1909 hóf Ungmennafélag Íslands að gefa út tímaritið Skinfaxa, sem komið hefur óslitið út síðan og haft mikið gildi.
Árið 1911 gaf Tryggvi Gunnarsson bankastjóri UMFÍ mikið landssvæði við Álftavatn. Þetta land fékk nafnið Þrastaskógur og er ein fegursta gróðurperla á suðvesturhorni landsins.
Fyrstu landsmót Ungmennafélags Íslands hófust árið 1911 og urðu tvö í byrjun og síðan endurreist árið 1940 og hafa verið óslitin síðan, þriðja hvert ár. Landsmótin eru nú orðin 26 frá upphafi. Þar koma þúsundir félaga saman og reyna með sér. Þessi mót hafa verið kölluð ólympíuleikar Íslands, enda stærstu og glæsilegustu íþróttamót sem haldin eru á landinu.
Árið 1992 hófust á vegum UMFÍ unglingalandsmót og hafa 14 mót verið haldin.
Ungmennafélagshreyfingin rekur Þjónustumiðstöð UMFÍ í Sigtúni 42 í Reykjavík, þaðan er hinum rúmlega 100 þúsund félagsmönnum þjónað.
Starfið er mjög fjölbreytt um allt land, þar sem fram fer fjölþætt menningarstarfsemi. Íþróttir eru fyrirferðamestar en fjölmargt annað fer þar fram. Til dæmis halda mörg félög uppi öflugri leiklistarstarfsemi og fjölmörg taka mikinn þátt í umhverfisverkefnum og hefur hreyfingin í heild unnið þar viðamikið starf. Ungmennafélögin gegna víða veigamiklu hlutverki í æskulýðsstarfi sveitarfélagi og sinna margvíslegum verkefnum í samstarfi við sveitarfélög. Ungmennafélag Íslands tekur mikinn þátt í erlendu samstarfi og þá mest innan Norðurlandanna.
Summary of the story of the Icelandic Youth Association (UMFÍ)
The Icelandic Youth Association (UMFÍ) is the national association of local youth associations. Its objective is to “Cultivate the people and the country”, and its slogan “Everything for Iceland”. Its banner is the white and blue flag which was the first pennant of independent Iceland. Its associated partners are 19 district societies and 10 directly linked organizations. The UMFÍ covers a total of 263 associations with about 90,000 members. The UMFÍ emphasizes that everybody can take part and that membership is a lifestyle.
The UMFÍ is the national association of youth associations in Iceland, founded in 1907. Its objective is “the cultivation of the people and the country.” This involves cultivating the best in every individual and also to pursue diligently the Icelandic language and our culture. Also to protect the country’s natural environment and to heal the wounds which have been caused by the interaction of the land and the nations or caused by nature itself.
The UMFÍ’s role is to co-ordinate the activities of the Icelandic youth associations and offer services to our associate associations and our members. Furthermore, The UMFÍ represents the youth associations in external relations, for example when dealing with the authorities and foreign bodies.
A brief history
The Icelandic Youth Association (UMFÍ) was founded at Thingvellir on 2nd August 1907, while the first local youth association was founded in Akureyri in early 1906. The vision of the youth associations spread like wildfire throughout the country, the fight for a better country and a better nation being taken up right away under the slogan “The cultivation of the people and the country.” The organization immediately gained widespread influence in society, increasing people’s public spirit and their belief in our land and our nation.
Our members started to cultivate forests, build swimming pools and meeting halls, construct facilities for sports activities, promote general meetings and promote debating societies where people could learn to speak in public. The struggle began for the construction of secondary schools which then became the foundation of education in the rural areas. There was hardly anything which our members did not get involved in if it served the country and its people.
In 1909, the UMFÍ began publishing the magazine Skinfaxi which is still going strong and has served its purpose well.
In 1911, the banker Tryggvi Gunnarsson gave the UMFÍ an expansive piece of land near Álftavatn lake. This area was given the name Thrastaskógur (Wood of the Thrushes), and is one of the most beautiful areas in the south-western Iceland.

The UMFÍ’s first national meetings started in 1911 and were held twice, and then they were reinstated in 1940 and have since been held uninterrupted every three years. Such national meetings have been held 23 times from their initiation. There, thousands of our member gather to compete with each other. These meetings have been called the Icelandic Olympics, being the largest and most impressive sports tournament held in Iceland.
In 1992, the UMFÍ initiated National Youth Sports Meetings, and nine such meetings had been held by 2006. As of 2002, such meetings have been held every year during Iceland’s biggest travel weekend, the bank holiday on the first Monday in August.

Our activities are very diversified all round the country, supporting widely diverse cultural programmes. While sports play a major part, many other activities are being carried out. For example, many of our associations are very active as amateur theatre clubs. Numerous associations are active in environmental programmes, our members having carried out comprehensive work in this field. In many areas youth associations play an important role in youth activities under the auspices of local governments and carry out various projects in co-operation with them. The UMFÍ is very active in foreign relations, mostly with the other Nordic countries.
