Regional offices of the regional sports federations

UMFÍ and ÍSÍ have set up eight regional offices with support from the Ministry of Education and Children. The organisations have signed an agreement to strengthen sports activities nationwide by establishing regional offices and Hvatasjóður (the Incentive Fund).

The regional offices are intended to support Iceland’s regional sports federations in implementing the sports policy of the sports movement and the state. The aim is also to increase the participation of children and young people in sport, with a special focus on the participation of children with disabilities, children from lower-income homes and children with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Proposals to establish the regional offices were approved at the ÍSÍ congress in spring 2023 and the UMFÍ congress in autumn 2023.

Goals of the regional offices

The role of the regional offices is to serve the regional sports federations in their area in a coordinated way. The idea is that stronger regional sports federations and regional offices all over the country will increase efficiency within the sports movement and enable them to deal with current and foreseeable tasks, strengthen strategic work and action nationwide and thereby promote the prosperity of children and others who use the movement’s services.

Vision

The vision is that the arrangement will lead to better use of human resources. Support for individual sports clubs will increase, and service to participants will therefore improve. The vision is also that as many people as possible will have the opportunity to do sport at the level they choose, whether for enjoyment, health or with elite performance as the goal.
