Jóhann Steinar has sat on the UMFÍ Board since 2017. In 2017–2019 he was a board member. In 2019 he became chair of UMFÍ’s executive board, and in 2020 he took over as vice-chair from Ragnheiður Högnadóttir. Since 2021, Jóhann Steinar has served as Chair of UMFÍ.

Jóhann Steinar is a Stjarnan man and has worked within the youth association movement from a young age. Like most people, he started with the broom, moved on to the scorer’s table, refereeing and onwards until he became a member of the men’s and women’s first-team councils of the club’s handball department and later the men’s first-team football council. Jóhann Steinar then joined Stjarnan’s main board. He became chair of the main board in 2011 and held the position for four years. In 2019 he was made an honorary member of Stjarnan.
